Season 2, Part 1: A Mixed Beginning

With part one of season two having been out since the 6th of August, of course I have watched it and had some time to think through the episodes. The outcome was not what I expected.

Being used to the fact that the first package of episodes is usually just the setup of a more eventful part two, without too much judgment let´s take a closer look.

Gloomy vibes, low saturation a creeping overall feeling has been a signature of the Addams family, not just on Netflix but since we have known them – and that is undeniably brought to us this season. The fact that you could guess the show in a second, because of the gloomy colors is a work of a cinematic mastermind for sure. Costumes are on point, the locations and the school are well-chosen, and the characters all contribute to the overall Wednesday atmosphere. Yet something still didn’t sit right with me.

Wednesday´s forced lines

Jenna Ortega is undoubtedly a talented woman. Her expressions and the empty signature stare are the work of a professional. What I felt though was, that some of her lines felt so forced that it threw me off the whole vibe. At some point I felt like they were trying so hard to give her this sarcastic “I-don’t-care vibe” that it went to a whole other direction.

From thrilling to … okay

As I mentioned earlier the aesthetic of the series is undeniable. With that being said, had it not been for that specific vibe, I wouldn´t have kept watching. Though it may sound harsh, the story was not really captivating for me. One might describe it as your typical – ‘I just prepared my lunch, let’s watch something’ – series”. And then there are the ones for which you make your free time.

As said earlier, let’s not discard all hope yet, maybe this was just a dreary prologue to a far more intriguing part two. Either way, we will find out on the 3rd of September.

As Wednesday said:

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being proven right.
